Dear Mrs. Boutilier,
For my capstone project I decided to hold donations for colon cancer. I plan on communicating with someone from ECHN John A. DeQuattro Cancer Center every week to give them an update on my plans. I have always had a strong passion for medicine and would like to continue down this path as a surgeon in the future. Fundraising for colon cancer has interested me because I had unfortunately lost my grandmother at a very young age due to colon cancer. Although I was very young, I remember being very close with her and loved her very much. I didn’t know colon cancer was a thing, which is why not many people don’t know about it. I will be setting up donation boxes anywhere I can with a brochure attached for more information. In the brochure I will give a summary of colon cancer, why I am doing this, along with a website I would like to make informing everyone about colon cancer and allowing them to provide their own cancer stories anonymously. I have around nine places I would like to put my donation boxes. I’d like to put them around two different nail salons, a dentist, a church, two small business if allowed, and three restaurants. As for school, I’m not too sure what I’d like to do here to collect money. I’m not even sure if I plan on collecting money from the school. I want to save lives and I am determined to do so. Hopefully, this will spread awareness to show how much of a silent killer colon cancer is and get more people to help out in the future.
The research question I would like my capstone to revolve around is what are the factors that affect the mortality rate of colon cancer patients? Colon cancer isn’t talked about as often. If people learn how many people die due to colon cancer and are aware of what the factors are, we can prevent it for everyone. I want to know why and how these factors contribute to colon cancer. I plan on gathering photographs of me helping out at the organizations, flyers, and the donation boxes as artifacts. The emails sent and received will be artifacts as well.
My mentor is Kimberly Forbes. She is a community relations manager at ECHN in Manchester Memorial Hospital and can be contacted at [email protected] or 860-906-8659. Kimberly has experience with helping those who have all types of cancer from lymphatic, to colon, to much more. She has knowledge about my topic and answers my questions regarding the topic. My learning stretch would be to get out of my comfort zone and work with new people and help them whenever I volunteer. It would also be staying consistent. With this project I need to present my ideas to the community and work with faces I have never seen before. I will also be counting over all my donations over and over again to be consistent and make sure everything is there. This will help me with my communication skills within teamwork and also help me stay more organized.
Sincerely,
Selina Rivera
