Colon Cancer
Selina Rivera
My name is Selina Rivera, a senior at Sports and Medical Sciences Academy. I was born and raised here in Connecticut. My father was born and partially raised in Puerto Rico. My mother was born and raised in Vietnam until she immigrated to America at the age of 27. Growing up, family has always been very important to us. My father would always take care of his family. My mother would constantly work hard to send money or other supplies like medicine over to Vietnam to give our family the best treatment. My brother would take care of me after school when I was younger while my parents were at work. Someone who has always been there and unconditionally loved me was my grandmother. At around the age of 5, I unfortunately lost my grandmother to colon cancer. At first I didn’t understand what this meant but I now realize I had lost my best friend. Coming from a very poor country, there was only so much doctors can do to provide for her. I’ve never seen my mother so heartbroken. Even after she lost her mother, she never stopped providing for her family.
